The Humanitarian Bowl pits 10-3 Northern Illinois against 8-4 Fresno State, tonight at 5:30 Eastern, on ESPN as usual. The teams take to the blue turf in Boise, Idaho, an outdoor field where the weather calls for a near 100% chance of snow and/or rain, with a high of 36 degrees.

Northern Illinois

NIU arrives by way of the MAC Championship game, where they lost to Miami in what has to be seen as a massive upset, following an 8-0 MAC season. Along the way, they picked up a Big 10 win over Minnesota, joining the parade of teams to accomplish that feat this year.

The Huskies, except for the Miami game, have been near impossible to stop and just as hard to score on, still ranking in the top 20 nationally in both stats. They haven’t been held under 20 since week 1, and beat the second best team in their division 65-30 a few weeks ago. If they can bounce back from losing the championship game, they’ll be difficult to beat tonight.

Fresno State

The Bulldogs quietly put together another nice season in the shadows of Boise State and Nevada. They picked up two BCS conference wins, taking down Cincinnati and Illinois, and went 5-3 in the conference. They only lost consecutive games once, to the leagues top two teams over six days.

The defense may be a bit suspect, but facing Boise State & Nevada will wreck any defensive stats. Fresno is giving up 29 points per game, matched with the 30 they’re scoring each week, which has left them in as many close games as you would imagine.

Prediction

On paper, this one should belong to Northern Illinois. But the tough loss to end the year, Fresno’s familiarity with the blue turf (they were there less than a month ago), and their confidence coming in off two good wins could even the score. NIU is favored by 1.5, but I think I’m going to predict a win for Fresno State, 34-30.

Since I didn’t get around to posting yesterday, I can include the East-division-deciding (probably) Tuesday night game, and once again it looks like the Ohio Bobcats are off to Detroit for the conference championship game, most likely against Northern Illinois. Miami will play Temple for 2nd in the division later this month. But first, the Saturday games…

Army 45, Kent State 28- Army gets bowl eligible, probably off to the Armed Forces Bowl, while Kent State drops to 4-6 with Western Michigan and Ohio standing in the way of 6-6. Army dominated this matchup, leading by at least 14 throughout the last 3 quarters. Next Game: Kent State at Western Michigan, Saturday; Army vs. Notre Dame (at that absurd field in Yankee Stadium), Saturday

Western Michigan 45, Eastern Michigan 30- This was never a comfortable game for Western, as Eastern had the game tied in the 3rd and within a touchdown in the 4th until the Broncos iced it with a late score. Their bowl hopes ride on beating Kent State and Bowling Green down the stretch. Next Game: Kent State at Western Michigan, Saturday; Eastern Michigan at Buffalo, Saturday

Navy 38, Central Michigan 37- What’s the deal with MAC coaches going for two when overtime is a near-sure-thing? It’s been a disaster all season. CMU staged a furious rally, with two touchdowns in the last three minutes, but went for two and lost the game at the end. I suppose it doesn’t matter much, since CMU isn’t going bowling, but I don’t understand the trend. Next Game: Central Michigan at Toledo, November 26; Arkansas State at Navy, Saturday

Ohio 31, Temple 23 (Tuesday)- This was a back & forth game most of the way, until Ohio broke it open in the 4th quarter with a pair of touchdowns, running their lead to 21. Temple got two back, but Ohio gathered in the final onside kick to take the win and command of the division. Next Game: Temple at Miami, November 23; Ohio at Kent State, November 26

Conference Championship Scenarios

East

Ohio hasn’t quite sewn up the division yet, but if they beat Kent State on Thanksgiving Friday, they are off to Detroit again.

If Ohio loses, and Miami beats Temple, Miami will win the division, provided they get by Akron this weekend first. If Miami should lose to Akron Saturday, Ohio clinches the division.

Temple is eliminated as their best hope is a tie with Ohio at 6-2, and Ohio holds the tiebreaker.

West

Northern Illinois controls its destiny with two games to play against some of the worst of the league. If they beat Ball State Saturday, the division is theirs.

Toledo needs NIU to lose both games while beating Bowling Green and Central Michigan to win out.

All other teams have been eliminated for some time.

The two top teams in the MAC got together last night, and like Boise-Hawaii and TCU-Utah… it wasn’t even close. NIU jumped all over Toledo, leading 28-0 at the half, then kept their foot on the gas on the way to a 65-30 victory and a clear path to the conference championship game. NIU improves to 8-2, and should be ready to join Nevada and UCF in the bottom of the Top 25 polls…if anybody remembers this one by Sunday morning.

The Huskies only have Ball State and Eastern Michigan standing between them and a 10-2, 8-0 season. Toledo probably should win out also (Bowling Green and CMU), and wrap it up at 8-4, 7-1, and play in the postseason.

We have more MAC action tonight, with Miami facing Bowling Green as they try to reach bowl eligibility and stay in the race for the conference championship. I may get a preview in, but if not then I’ll link you to a better one this afternoon. Otherwise, a quiet day is in store on the fringe before some weekend previews tomorrow and Friday.

Ohio 34, Buffalo 17- Thursday’s game held no great surprise, as Ohio keeps itself in the chase by handling Buffalo comfortably. Next Game: Ball State at Buffalo, November 12; Ohio at Temple, November 16

Central Michigan 26, Western Michigan 22- Central Michigan rallied in the fourth quarter Friday night to win and sweep the Michigan MAC group, a nice highlight in a down year for the Chips. Next Game: Central Michigan at Navy, Saturday; Eastern Michigan at Western Michigan, Saturday

Ball State 37, Akron 30- Ball State edges Akron to confirm that Akron is probably the worst team in the MAC. Next Game: Ball State at Buffalo, November 12; Miami at Akron, November 17

Temple 28, Kent State 10- Temple extinguishes any hopes KSU might have had of hanging around for the conference championship and is now full steam ahead toward Ohio next week. Next Game: Army at Kent State, Saturday; Ohio at Temple, November 16

MAC Championship Picture

East

Nothing changed at the top- Ohio and Temple control their own destiny, and they’ll face off on November 16. If Temple wins that one, and Miami keeps winning, then you get a division championship game between them on November 23. If Ohio wins, only Kent State stands between them and another trip to Detroit. Kent State, Buffalo, Bowling Green and of course Akron are all eliminated from the division race (Kent State cannot finish better than 5-3, while the winner of Ohio-Temple will have six wins).

West

The West is a two-team show, as everyone else has 3 losses already. NIU and Toledo play tomorrow night in the MAC game of the week/month/year? Neither team has a winning team left on the schedule after Tuesday, so the path to Detroit is pretty clear. Western Michigan, Ball State, Central and Eastern Michigan are all eliminated.

Things went mostly according to plan in the MAC this weekend, with only a mild upset at the bottom of the standings disrupting the favorites’ day.

Northern Illinois 28, Western Michigan 21- This was a back & forth affair, with WMU leading 21-20 inside six minutes to play, but the Huskies responded with the winning touchdown to remain unbeaten in the MAC heading into next weekend’s showdown. Next Game: Toledo at Northern Illinois (Tuesday 11/9), Western Michigan at Central Michigan (Friday 11/5)

Temple 30, Akron 0- This result is of course, remarkably unsurprising. Akron is bad at football this year. Next Game: Temple at Kent State (Saturday), Akron at Ball State (Saturday)

Ohio 38, Louisiana 31- Louisiana led much of this game, but a wild 4th quarter saw Ohio grab the lead and pull away for the win. Still, a surprisingly competitive game for a Rajin’ Cajuns team that appeared to be done a week ago. Next Game: Buffalo at Ohio (Thursday 11/5)

Miami 21, Buffalo 9- Miami bounces back from the loss to Ohio and is now one game from bowl eligibility. The Redhawks never trailed in this one, as Buffalo struggled to make it interesting as the game wound down. Next Game: Buffalo at Ohio (Thursday 11/5), Miami at Bowling Green (Wednesday 11/10)

Bowling Green 17, Central Michigan 10- Bowling Green gets a last minute touchdown to secure their first MAC win of the season. Next Game: Western Michigan at Central Michigan (Friday 11/5), Miami at Bowling Green (Wednesday 11/10)

Kent State 33, Ball State 14- Ball State hung around for a while, trailing 14-20 heading into the fourth, but Kent State put the game away with a pair of touchdowns. Next Game: Temple at Kent State (Saturday), Akron at Ball State (Saturday)

Toledo 42, Eastern Michigan 7- Toledo coasted through the Ball State game last week, but had no trouble dismantling Eastern Michigan. Next Game: Toledo at Northern Illinois (Tuesday 11/9), Eastern Michigan idle.

Conference Championship Races

East

Everything is coming down to the final few weeks in the East, with Temple still waiting to face off with Miami and Ohio. If Temple fades, Ohio does have the tiebreaker over Miami, but if Miami can top Temple but get the Owls to beat Ohio, Miami takes the league.

West

NIU and Toledo have pulled away from the pack and will most likely settle the issue on November 9. Western Michigan has lost to both teams, and the rest of the division is deplorable.

Week 9 Power Rankings

This has become a league of two halves- the top half has some pretty good football teams in it, while the bottom half could lose to anybody in the country on most weekends.

The MAC has finally reached the end of its loaded Saturday schedules, which is cool because previewing & recapping 7 or 8 MAC games every week gets a little tedious. Weeknight play begins next Thursday for the league.

12:00 PM- Northern Illinois at Western Michigan: The marquee game of the week in the MAC, as Western will get their chance to beat a MAC team that isn’t mired in the bottom of the standings. Their pass offense has been on fire lately, but the NIU defense is the real deal. NIU then goes on to face Toledo, but they can’t get ahead of themselves tomorrow. Line: NIU by 8.5. I do think the Huskies should win, but a touchdown seems more appropriate. NIU will have to score points to do it though, so I’ll say 35-28.

1:00 PM- Akron at Temple: Temple came alive last week when they shut out Buffalo, and the schedule stays easy when Akron comes to town. Line: Temple by 29.5. I hate lines this big, even with a 42 point win against a better Buffalo team last week, since there’s always the potential for Temple to go up 24 at halftime and coast to the finish. That being said, I’ll reluctantly assume that they want to keep the momentum up before the schedule clamps down, and call it Temple 41-6.

2:00 PM- Louisiana at Ohio: Louisiana takes it’s struggling operation out of conference to face a rapidly improving Ohio team. Ohio came out of the gate slowly, but is back in the division race, while Louisiana watched Western Kentucky terminate their losing streak on the Cajuns field last week. Line: Ohio by 14.5. If Western Kentucky can do it, Ohio should too. 38-14 for the Bobcats.

3:30 PM- Miami at Buffalo: Miami hasn’t lost two games in a row all season, and I don’t think they’ll start this week, despite Buffalo looking to turn things around after last week’s loss. Line: Miami by 2.5. I’ll take that. RedHawks win this one 28-20.

3:30 PM- Bowling Green at Central Michigan: Bowling Green is already ineligible for postseason play, and CMU will be soon. My guess is that the Chips break the losing streak, but who knows. Line: Central Michigan by 11.5. That’s a lot of points for two bad teams. At most, CMU wins by 10, 24-14.

3:30 PM- Ball State at Kent State: Ball State can sneak up on teams that look past them, but ultimately Kent State should have no trouble handling them. Line: Kent State by 10. Ten is what I would have guessed. But if I had to lean one way, it’s always against Ball State, so let’s say Kent State wins this one 38-24.

4:00 PM- Toledo at Eastern Michigan: Toledo should have beaten Ball State by three touchdowns, but only managed a 7 point win. They should win this one, and maybe this is the week they don’t give their opponents a head start, but one of these days their carelessness is going to cost them. Line: Toledo by 11. Toledo is more than 11 points better than Eastern Michigan, but that doesn’t mean they’ll cover that. Either way, I’ll stick with them, against my better judgment. Toledo 31-10.

My picks went 3-4 last week, 6-10 total, reducing the overall record to 93-86-2. This week, they are summarized as such:
Western Michigan +8.5 vs. Northern Illinois
Temple -29.5 vs. Akron
Ohio -14.5 vs. Louisiana
Miami -2.5 at Buffalo
Bowling Green +11.5 at Central Michigan
Kent State -10 vs. Ball State
Toledo -11 at Eastern Michigan

Schedulers across the non-BCS universe have done a nice job arranging for back-loaded championship races in all 5 leagues. These are getting lost in the national race, of course, so here’s a look at some games to keep in mind as we steam toward the end of the year. We’ll give it another week or so, and start writing full blown conference championship scenarios, at least for the MAC & C-USA, because the division races keep more teams alive.

Week 9 (10/30)

East Carolina at UCF – both teams come into this one unbeaten in conference play, the latest point in the current era that’s happened in C-USA. Winner takes control of the division, and has the fast track to hosting the championship game.

Northern Illinois at Western Michigan- If Western can pull an upset here, they set up a potential three-way tie atop MAC West. If they don’t, they’ll bow out of the championship race and leave it to NIU and Toledo.

Week 10 (11/5-6)

Week 10 might be the single biggest week of the year for non-BCS football championships.

UCF at Houston (Friday night) – at worst, these two teams will have one conference loss each, and the loser of this one may be nearly eliminated from their division race, while the winner dodges one of the final bullets of the season.

Hawaii at Boise State (Saturday, 2 PM) – there is a very good chance that both teams come into this game unbeaten in WAC play, and Hawaii might have the only offense capable of keeping up with the Broncos.

TCU at Utah (Saturday, 3:30 PM) – right about the time Boise & Hawaii go to halftime, the de facto Mountain West championship game kicks off. Both teams have looked outstanding this year, and it is highly unlikely that either loses before this game.

Week 11 (11/9-13)

Toledo at Northern Illinois (Tuesday 11/9) – Just a few days after the western leagues start falling into place, the unofficial MAC West championship will likely be happening, with both teams unbeaten in league play, assuming NIU gets past WMU as noted above.

Southern Miss at UCF (Saturday 11/13) – UCF’s three week gauntlet comes to an end, and if they survive all 3 then the division and conference championship home game is all but theirs (only Tulane and Memphis lie beyond). If UCF has beaten ECU, then Southern Miss can win and force a three way tie at the top, provided that UCF beats Houston too. This has the potential to get very confusing.

FIU at Troy (Saturday) – Troy’s final test on the road to their 5th conference championship. This might be too early to consider FIU a major contender, but at 2-0 they’re the only other unbeaten team left in Sun Belt play. If not FIU, there’s nobody left to challenge the Trojans.

Week 12 (11/16-20)

Ohio at Temple (Tuesday 11/16) – Most likely, this is your MAC East showdown, although Miami is still hanging around for a game with Temple the next week. Ohio kept Temple out of the league championship game last year, and should get a chance to do it again.

Houston at Southern Miss (Saturday 11/20) – Southern Miss has their own gauntlet to run after the UCF game, and the loser of this game is definitely out of the division race. It’s also possible that both are chasing 2nd or 3rd in the division by this point, all depending on the outcomes beforehand.

Week 13 (11/26-27)

The MAC plays all of their season finales on Friday the 26th (although Temple-Miami is the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week), so it will be up to the division leaders to avoid traps at that point.

SMU at ECU (Friday 11/26) – SMU has an easy path to East Carolina and could arrive in town with a 6-1 conference record. If Houston loses before that point, then SMU is playing to clinch the division. East Carolina’s fate could hang in the balance as well, because if UCF wins their game but stumbles elsewhere, then ECU may have the edge breaking a three-way tie.

Boise State at Nevada (Friday) – Nevada is the last good team to stand in Boise’s way, and if they happen to win this one, they too could set up a 3-way tie, with Hawaii in the mix as well. Boise will be playing to protect a conference lead and secure their third BCS bid.

BYU at Utah (Saturday 11/27) – BYU is certainly having a down year, but they’ve rallied in the past few weeks and may have a chance to do some damage in the latter part of the season. Some say this rivalry is as fierce as any in the southeast, and Utah could be on the brink of a BCS bid of their own, should they survive TCU and Notre Dame in the first part of the month.

Week 14/Championship Week

The MAC Championship will be Friday Night, while the C-USA Championship happens Saturday morning. The WAC has a full slate, including Boise hosting Utah State to finish things off and a few non-conference games. In the Sun Belt, most teams are done for the year, but we do see Middle Tennessee State head to FIU for what could be a game to decide 2nd in the league, or even FIU’s chance at a championship. Troy will be hosting Florida Atlantic.

Business as usual in the MAC, for once, with the only result that might be considered a surprise was Ohio beating Miami soundly. Otherwise the bad teams lost and the good teams won. It might be worth noting that Akron does now hold the longest losing streak in the country, but they may go back & forth with New Mexico on that as the bye weeks shake out.

Temple 42, Buffalo 0- Perhaps the first big, complete game from Temple all season, as they set season highs for scoring total and margin of victory. Next Week: Akron at Temple, Miami at Buffalo

Ohio 34, Miami 13- The Bobcats just stuffed the Miami offense as they steadily added touchdowns to their total throughout the game. Ohio is now on a four game win streak after a sluggish start, and all four have been convincing wins. Next Week: Louisiana at Ohio, Miami at Buffalo

Kent State 30, Bowling Green 6- The wheels seem to have come off for the Falcons, as they managed a lone touchdown (with the PAT blocked) in an outing against a Kent State team that hasn’t been overwhelmingly good this year. BGSU is now eliminated from bowl consideration. Next Week: Ball State at Kent State, Bowling Green at Central Michigan

Western Michigan 56, Akron 10- Western Michigan remains pretty good, Akron remains awful. Next Week: Northern Illinois at Western Michigan, Akron at Temple

Northern Illinois 33, Central Michigan 7- CMU continues it’s freefall, and despite NIU being properly favored, this is still an embarrassing outcome for the defending champs. Next Week: Northern Illinois at Western Michigan, Bowling Green at Central Michigan

Virginia 48, Eastern Michigan 21- No momentum for the Eagles after breaking their losing streak, pummeled at the hands of a bad Virginia team. Next Week: Toledo at Eastern Michigan

Toledo 31, Ball State 24- Toledo continues it’s disturbing pattern of very slow starts, this time giving Ball State a 17 point head start before rallying for the win. Early prediction- if Toledo gives Northern Illinois 14 or 20 bonus points, there won’t be a comeback. Next Week: Ball State at Kent State, Toledo at Eastern Michigan

Conference Championship Races

East

The East remains a wide open shootout with Ohio, Temple, and Miami all in the thick of things. Ohio now holds the tiebreaker over Miami, while Temple will play both teams in the final two weeks of the year. Miami somehow avoids both Temple and Northern Illinois this year, and there is a legitimate chance that they’ll be 6-1 when they face Temple. Ohio has Buffalo, Temple, and then a minor rivalry game with Kent State to close out the year, while Temple sees Akron and Kent State before the other two contenders.

West

The West race looked like it was all about NIU and Toledo, and perhaps it still is, but Western Michigan is still hanging around, waiting for Toledo to slip up. Northern Illinois faces WMU and then the big one against Toledo in the next two weeks, while Toledo has already beaten WMU. If NIU gets by those two, they coast to the finish facing Ball State and Eastern Michigan to close out the season.

Week 8 Power Rankings

The power has shifted, for now, to the top of the West. There aren’t many cross-division games yet, but the MAC schedule sets us up nicely to have one big game each week from here on in.

The MAC is really the only league that doesn’t have an extra-light schedule this week. The MAC has tomorrow and one more normal Saturday, then November comes, and the MAC has games on 12 days over 4 gameweeks. It’s crazy- you’ll see. But to accommodate all that, many teams don’t have byes until that gets going. So we have a full 7 games tomorrow, while no other league has more than 5.

12:00 PM- Temple at Buffalo: Temple is 5-2, but has yet to really beat a team convincingly, save for a good outing against UConn. Buffalo can be a tricky place to play, and while Temple should get their sixth win here, it might be ugly again. Line: Temple by 7.5. Hard to see Temple winning by more than a touchdown, so I’m inclined to take the points here. Temple grinds out a 20-17 win.

1:00 PM- Ohio at Miami: Both teams have dates with Temple on the horizon, but this game is critical for the chances of winning the division for both teams. Miami has played very well against non-BCS competition, and a win here would be another milestone in the program’s turnaround. Line: Ohio by 3. I see this game as a tossup, so I guess I’m inclined to go with the home team instead. Miami grabs a close one, 31-28.

3:30 PM- Kent State at Bowling Green: Bowling Green is on the brink of formally being eliminated from postseason consideration, while Kent State needs a win to jump start their season with the worst of it behind them. Line: Kent State by 2. I would have guessed a little more, although BGSU did take Temple down to the wire last week. Kent State 31-24.

3:30 PM- Western Michigan at Akron: Will Akron go 0-12? Don’t know yet. But they’ll probably go 0-8 before Sunday. Line: Western Michigan by 7. That’s all? Yes please. Western rolls, 35-10.

4:00 PM- Central Michigan at Northern Illinois: Before the season started, this would have been the key game on the MAC West schedule. Instead, CMU is mired in a dismal year, including a pair of overtime losses, while Northern Illinois is absolutely rolling after a slow start. Line: Northern Illinois by 10. I could see it being closer with the Chips’ propensity for overtime this year, but more likely a 2 touchdown game when all is said & done. NIU 27-14.

6:00 PM- Eastern Michigan at Virginia: An odd paycheck game this late in the season for the Eagles, who come in celebrating the end of their losing streak. Virginia’s only wins this year come over FCS teams, and they are 0-4 with a score deficit of 128-59 against grown up teams. Line: UVa by 24. That’s pretty generous for a team that hasn’t SCORED 24 against a FBS team yet. Eastern Michigan is bad, but so is Virginia, and I’m quite glad I’ll be elsewhere while this game is happening. Virginia wins a dreadful game something like 28-17.

7:00 PM- Ball State at Toledo: Another ugly mismatch- the day really goes downhill fast after Miami vs. Ohio tomorrow. Line: Toledo by 11.5. I’ll take that happily in what could be a 42-20 game.

Pick Summary:
Buffalo +7.5 vs. Temple
Miami +3 vs. Ohio
Kent State -2 at Bowling Green
Western Michigan -7 at Akron
Northern Illinois -10 vs. Central Michigan
Eastern Michigan +24 at Virginia
Toledo -11.5 vs. Ball State

Another eventful weekend in the MAC, with further shifting in the balance of power, big comebacks, and the end of a miserable losing streak.

Miami 27, Central Michigan 20- This one should have gone to overtime, but the Chips missed a wide-open Miami receiver who sprinted away for a 71 yard game winner with 19 seconds left. Miami is just two games away from bowl eligibility. Next Week: Ohio at Miami, Central Michigan at Northern Illinois

Temple 28, Bowling Green 27- Bowling Green decided to go for two after scoring what should have been the tying touchdown late in the game, came up short, and saw Temple escape with this one. Of course, it shouldn’t have been that close, but Temple’s offense remains questionable. Next Week: Temple at Buffalo, Kent State at Bowling Green

Eastern Michigan 41, Ball State 38- This was a bizarre game. Ball State couldn’t protect a 21-0 lead, as EMU stormed back to lead 35-28, but couldn’t hold that as Ball State tied the game and sent it to overtime. Ball State kicked a field goal to start things off, but the Eagles responded with a touchdown to win their first game since 2008. Next Week: Eastern Michigan at Virginia (why?), Ball State at Toledo

Ohio 38, Akron 10- Akron was noncompetitive once again as Ohio went up big early and coasted to the finish. Next Week: Ohio at Miami, Western Michigan at Akron

Notre Dame 44, Western Michigan 20- The Broncos lost ground in the first half giving up big plays and short fields to the Irish, and couldn’t keep up as Notre Dame finished them off in the second half. Next Week: Western Michigan at Akron

Northern Illinois 45, Buffalo 14- Buffalo hung around a while, trailing 21-14 at halftime, but NIU shut them out in the second half and stays unbeaten in MAC play. Next Week: Central Michigan at Northern Illinois, Temple at Buffalo

Toledo 34, Kent State 21- I thought Toledo 2009 was back, the inconsistent club that could have won or contended for the MAC title but kept losing winnable games. Kent State led at halftime, 21-7, but Toledo stomped them in the 2nd half, with 27 unanswered points and their third MAC win. Next Week: Ball State at Toledo, Kent State at Bowling Green

Division Title Races

East

No big changes atop the East leaderboard, as Miami, Ohio, Temple, and Buffalo still control their destiny, as the only losses are to West teams and none have played each other. Kent State could rally with help, but Bowling Green and of course Akron are toast.

West

Toledo and Northern Illinois are barreling toward their November 9 Tuesday showdown which could decide the division. Western Michigan is still alive, but already needs Toledo to lose twice even if they win out.

Week 7 Power Rankings

No big changes at the top, although the bottom end is a bigger mess than ever- in terms of 1A wins, Ball State’s only win is over CMU, CMU’s only win is over EMU, and EMU’s only win is over Ball State.
