WAC Week 11 Wrapup & Conference Championship Picture

It was business as usual in the WAC this weekend, since we knew that Boise State had pounded Idaho Friday night.  That big win did help in the national scene, as TCU struggled to put away San Diego State.  Of course, if you’re a regular reader here, you already knew that SDSU was very good, and [...]

WAC Week 11 Preview

Boise State plays the first of three straight Friday games tonight, with three other conference tilts tomorrow including a big one featuring two of the league’s top teams.

9:00 PM Friday, ESPN2- #4 Boise State at Idaho: The Kibbie Dome will be loud and generally unpleasant for the Broncos tonight, but unfortunately for Vandal fans, I suspect [...]

WAC Week 10 Wrapup

The big time matchup that we were supposed to have turned into another Boise rout, while the rest of the WAC is starting to sort itself out.

Utah State 27, New Mexico State 22- The battle of the Aggies goes to the northern ones, as NMSU isn’t able to hold a 4th quarter lead to find it’s [...]

Mountain West & WAC Week 8 Preview

This is a quieter week in the western leagues, matchup-wise, before the fireworks start next week (TCU-Utah, Hawaii-Boise).

Mountain West

2:00 PM, The Mtn- San Diego State at Wyoming: The season comes down to this for the Cowboys- find a way to beat SDSU, and they could conceivably win out and find a bowl home at 6-6.  Meanwhile, [...]

WAC Mid-Season Report Cards, Part II

At long last, the final four teams that I haven’t attached an arbitrary grade to.  Here are Boise State, Fresno State, Idaho, and New Mexico State.

Boise State

Record: 7-0, 3-0 WAC
Highlights: Wins against Virginia Tech and Oregon State, #1 in total defense nationally, leading conference in a great many stat categories.
Weak Points: The schedule, also [...]

WAC Week 8 Wrapup & Power Rankings

Only 3 weekend games in the WAC, with Boise State & Louisiana Tech pairing off tomorrow night, which is really not a great thing for Boise.  They’ll get a little bit of attention, but it means two consecutive Saturdays without appearing on the football radar.  They also have a Friday date with Idaho around the corner, but that one should carry a slightly higher profile (and minor upset risk).

Idaho 37, New Mexico State 14- Idaho led 31-0 in the second quarter, and the rest was history.  Next Week: San Jose State at New Mexico State, Idaho at Hawaii

Hawaii 45, Utah State 7- It certainly appears that Utah State peaked with their win over BYU, as they haven’t even been competitive since.  Hawaii is continuing to roll, and has joined Nevada right on the edge of the rankings.  Next Week: Idaho at Hawaii, Utah State at Nevada

Fresno State 33, San Jose State 18- Fresno dominated this one, leading 27-3 after 3 quarters before SJSU closed the gap in garbage time.  Next Week: San Jose State at New Mexico State, Fresno State is idle. Read Post

WAC Week 7 Wrapup & Power Rankings

A late night upset rattles the standings in the WAC, while Boise continues its dominance, currently holding a combined score of 107-0 in two WAC games so far.

Louisiana Tech 48, Idaho 35- The Bulldogs surge continues, knocking off two would-be upstarts in back to back weeks.  La Tech trailed briefly in the second quarter, but dominated the second half to notch their second league win. Next Week: New Mexico State at Idaho, Louisiana Tech at Boise State (Tuesday 10/26)

Boise State 48, San Jose State 0- Boise State put up 41 in the first half, the other 7 early in the third quarter, and shut it down from there.  Read Post

WAC Week 7 Preview

The WAC is into full-blown league play, which means only four games this weekend.

4:00 PM- Idaho at Louisiana Tech: La Tech showed it’s first signs of life last week when they knocked off Utah State, while Idaho comes in off a bye week, beating Western Michigan handily two weeks ago.  Line: Idaho by 1.  The Vandals [...]

WAC Week 6 Wrapup & Power Rankings

Not a bad weekend for the WAC- they win both out of conference games and lock up the season-long win over the Mountain West, 7-4 with one more to go.

Louisiana Tech 24, Utah State 6- The Bulldogs’ offense came alive Saturday, while the Aggies never got anything going, and couldn’t capitalize on any momentum from their win over BYU last week.  Both teams are now 2-4 with a long road back to bowl eligibility. Next Week: Idaho at Louisiana Tech, Utah State is idle.

New Mexico State 16, New Mexico 14- Read Post

WAC Week 5 Wrapup & Power Rankings

Things didn’t go so well for the WAC this week, despite Idaho’s win over Western Michigan, as San Jose State lost to a FCS team and Boise dropped in the polls despite winning by 59.  We’ve known all along that Boise would need help to get to the national title game, but it’s starting to look like they’ll need more than we thought.

Idaho 33, Western Michigan 13- Idaho wins its third straight against MAC opponents over the last two years, returning the favor after WMU won big in Moscow in 2008.  The Broncos pulled the game within four in the third quarter, but it was all Vandals through the rest of the second half.  Next Week: Idaho is idle, at Louisiana Tech 10/16.

UC Davis 14, San Jose State 13- The Spartans offense sputtered the whole game, turning good opportunities into only 13 points in the first half, then failed to respond as UC Davis scored a pair of third quarter touchdowns to beat a FBS team for only the second time in school history.  Next Week: San Jose State at Nevada

Boise State 59, New Mexico State 0- Read Post
