MAC Week 4 Preview

The previews this week are going to be really short, because by the time you read them, I should be somewhere between UCF and Kansas State.  Unless you read them next Tuesday, which would not make much sense.  Mostly I’ll be highlighting any league games, upset possibilities, and national profile games, and just listing off the [...]

Non-BCS Top 25

School W L Last Week This Week
1 Boise State 2 0 d. Wyoming Oregon State
Boise State’s biggest game of the year happens Saturday, on ABC in primetime. GameDay is on campus and everything- now don’t screw this up!
2 TCU 3 0 d. Baylor at SMU
SMU is a cross-town rival for TCU, and a good team in their own right, but TCU should win this game comfortably.
3 Utah 3 0 d. New Mexico San Jose State
Utah has San Jose State and a week off before the schedule starts getting a bit tougher, but the worst of it is loaded into the last five weeks.
4 Nevada 3 0 d. California at BYU
If Nevada gets a win in Provo, they should join the other three in the top 25, and it’s possible, even likely, that they will.
5 Fresno State 2 0 d. Utah State at Mississippi
If Fresno can beat reeling Ole Miss, they’ll advance to 3-0 with two wins over BCS conference teams, joining TCU and possibly Boise as the only teams with two Big 6 wins.
6 Temple 3 0 d. Connecticut at Penn State
Temple faces their second consecutive BCS team when they go into Penn State this weekend, which is probably the toughest matchup among the unbeaten teams left this week.
7 Air Force 2 1 loss to Oklahoma at Wyoming
Air Force threw everything they had at Oklahoma, but need to bounce back with a road trip to an always-dangerous Wyoming team.
8 San Diego State 2 1 loss to Missouri Utah State
The Aztecs are off to a great start, despite the last minute loss to Missouri.  Beating Utah State will confirm that they are among the top non-BCS teams.
9 SMU 2 1 d. Washington State TCU
SMU got it’s first BCS league win since 2000 Saturday, now has to face a cross-town rival that appeared in a BCS bowl last year.  Tough matchup, but SMU may be able to stay close for a while.
10 Houston 2 1 loss to UCLA Tulane
Houston lost it’s top two quarterbacks on Saturday, but they have Tulane and then a bye week to get one of their two freshmen ready to go before the bulk of the C-USA season.

BCS Buster Watch

Week 3 decimated our list- East Carolina was done in by an angry Virginia Tech team, and Houston saw QB #1, QB #2, and any BCS hopes bite the dirt against UCLA.  Air Force ran out of time against Oklahoma, and Missouri had just a bit too much time left against San Diego State.  And then [...]

Mountain West Week 3 Wrapup & Power Rankings

The weekend did not go well for the Mountain West.  0-3 against non-BCS leagues and 1-6 out of conference overall.  The matchups weren’t in their favor, sending mid-level teams up against the likes of Boise State.  TCU was the lone highlight, blowing out Baylor by 35.

Florida State 34, BYU 10- BYU had the game within reach, scoring 10 late in the second quarter to get to halftime down just 13-10.  After that, though, it was all Seminoles, who have now beaten the Cougars in back to back seasons.  Next Week: Nevada at BYU

Miami (OH) 31, Colorado State 10- CSU is really having a miserable run right now, but at least they scored a touchdown, coming 178 minutes into the season.  Next Week: Idaho at Colorado State

Oklahoma 27, Air Force 24- Air Force gave the Sooners all they could handle, rallying back from a 27-10 deficit but simply running out of possessions after the momentum swung their way.  Next Week: Air Force at Wyoming

TCU 45, Baylor 10- TCU went up 14-0 early and never looked back as they rolled the first of their two Texas opponents of the season/week. Next Week: SMU at TCU, Friday

Missouri 27, San Diego State 24- Read Post

WAC Week 3 Wrapup & Power Rankings

Nevada netted a big win Friday night to kick off the weekend, which saw the league go 3-0 against other non-BCS conferences while coming up short in a bid for another BCS win.  But nobody lost to a FCS team, which is always a nice touch.

Colorado 31, Hawaii 13- Hawaii failed on two trips inside the 10 in the first half, but still led at halftime 10-0.  Colorado figured something out at halftime, outscoring the Warriors 31-3 in the final two periods.  Next Week: Charleston Southern at Hawaii

Navy 37, Louisiana Tech 23- Navy found its scoring offense as Louisiana Tech blew a 23-16 halftime lead when the Midshipmen scored three unanswered touchdowns to close out the game.  Next Week: Southern Mississippi at Louisiana Tech, Navy at Air Force

San Jose State 16, Southern Utah 11- SJSU trailed 11-10 until a touchdown with 70 seconds to go put them ahead and saved the Spartans from an embarrassing defeat.  Next Week: San Jose State at Utah

Fresno State 41, Utah State 24- Read Post

MAC Week 3 Wrapup & Power Rankings

The MAC weekend might not have gone as well as they would have liked, but there were a few highlights to be found too. Things are shaping up to get very interesting once conference play begins.

Ohio State 43, Ohio 7- This outcome is a surprise to no one, although it would have been nice to see Ohio compete for a little while.  Next Week: Ohio at Marshall

Penn State 24, Kent State 0- Kent State gave the Nittany Lions fits on defense, allowing only 3 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, but never had any life on offense.  Next Week: idle. At Miami October 2.

Temple 30, Connecticut 16- Temple hung around in a back and forth game until 16 points in the final quarter sealed Temple’s first BCS win since being jettisoned from the Big East, and the first of the season for the MAC.  Next Week: Temple at Penn State

Illinois 28, Northern Illinois 22- Read Post

Conference USA Week 3 Wrapup & Power Rankings

After a good start Friday night, Conference USA had a mostly forgettable Saturday in week 3.  Both unbeaten teams lost to 0-2 BCS schools and injuries decimated the preseason favorites.  On the upside, teams went 4-1 against non-BCS leagues and did get a BCS win to bring the total to 2.

Virginia Tech 49, East Carolina 27- Neither team could make stops in the first half, but the Hokies figured something out at halftime to turn the tide- ECU led at halftime 24-21, but was outscored 28-3 in the second half to suffer their first loss of the year.  Next Week: ECU is idle,  At North Carolina October 2.

SMU 35, Washington State 21- The Mustangs improve to 2-1 on the season and get their first win against a BCS league since 2000.  Kyle Padron led the way with 5 touchdowns, pulling away from the Cougars after being tied at 14 at halftime.  Next Week: TCU at SMU (Friday)

UAB 34, Troy 33- This one looked like it was over in the second quarter, with Troy steadily driving away up to a 23-0 lead.  A quarterback change to Bryan Ellis turned the tide, but it still took a frantic 99 yard, 1:09 drive to score the winning touchdown with no time on the clock.  Next Week: UAB at Tennessee

Bowling Green 44, Marshall 28- Read Post

Sun Belt Week 3 Wrapup

First, a programming note: Starting Thursday morning, I will be venturing to Manhattan, Kansas to see UCF play Kansas State (and hopefully not lose by 30).  If all goes according to plan, the weekend previews will still appear at their regularish time on Thursday and Friday, but may be missing any late breaking news.  Twitter will probably be quiet too, since I’ll be playing fan all weekend.  Now, on to the Sun Belt’s dreadful weekend.

Things went badly for the Belt Saturday- they couldn’t have gone much worse.  Blown leads, blowout losses, and zero wins out of conference.  I’ll try to make this quick…

Army 24, North Texas 0- North Texas was forced to start backup QB Derek Thompson after the primary starter went down last week with a dislocated hip, but Thompson was knocked out early with a broken leg.  Riley Dodge, who played QB but moved out to WR this year, was brought back over to QB the rest of the game, but was understandably unsuccessful.  Army picks up its first shutout since 2005 in their most complete game of the season. Next Week: North Texas at Florida Atlantic, Army at Duke

UAB 34, Troy 33- Read Post

Fringe Hangover: A Lot of Games

With only five conference games going on yesterday, and only three of the 54 Fringe teams taking the week off, we had an almost overwhelming quantity of games yesterday.  It was wonderful.  Well, for the fan, not for every team or every league.

The Sun Belt had the worst day yesterday, losing all five out of conference [...]
