Week 13 Wrapup: Western Athletic Conference

The WAC’s big showdown came on Friday night, but Saturday wasn’t without it’s surprises too.  The league now just needs one more upset to get another team into the bowl picture, while the middle three or four teams in the league are proving to be more even than once thought.

WAC Standings

Conf Overall
Boise State 7-0 12-0
Nevada 7-1 8-4
Fresno State 6-2 7-4
Idaho 4-4 7-5
Hawaii 3-5 6-6
Utah State 3-5 4-8
Louisiana Tech 2-5 3-8
San Jose State 1-6 2-9
New Mexico State 1-6 3-9

Week 13 Results

Boise State 44, Nevada 33- Nevada fell behind early, and gave it everything they had, but never trimmed the gap enough to make the Broncos sweat too much.  Boise could technically lose to New Mexico State this weekend and still be WAC Champion, but obviously their sights are set much higher.

Bonus non-WAC game that meant everything to the WAC: Oklahoma 27, Oklahoma State 0- Boise just loves the Sooners.  Not only to they play the straight man in Boise’s biggest national moment ever, now they take care of the biggest remaining obstacle between the Broncos and a BCS bowl.  And in grand fashion, too.  Boise State still needs the last week to play out like it’s supposed to- Texas and Cincinnati need to win to keep extra teams from getting bids, and it would help if Georgia Tech wins too, just to be sure.

Utah State 52, Idaho 49-The Vandals wound up in another shootout at home, but no last-second heroics this time as they fall to 7-5 after their 7-2 start.  The season is still a rousing success on the whole, and they will play somewhere in one more game (word on the street is that it’s the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise after all, one day after I change my prediction away from it).  Utah State wraps up at 4-8, which is something they can look to build on next season.

San Jose State 13, New Mexico State 10- SJSU grabs at least one more win for their retiring coach, with a trip to Louisiana next week to round out his career.

Hawaii 24, Navy 17- And just like that, Hawaii is 6-6, on a four game win streak, and just needs to upset Wisconsin Saturday night to earn a Hawaii Bowl bid.  That’ll be their toughest game since Boise, and I suspect they won’t be favored, but it’s not an impossible task either.  Not sure what might have happened to Navy out there, but since they’re already locked into a bowl and they’ve got Army ahead, seems they just took their foot off the gas after the trip from Maryland to Hawaii.
