Week 3 Wrapup: The Sun Belt

172-20.  This is the combined score of the three Noon SEC vs. Sun Belt games that the SEC Network has shown the last three weeks.  I have watched almost all of each game, rooting for the Belt teams, feeling the pain of their fans as the SEC defenses shut them down mercilessly.  The good news is that the SEC Net is now turning to in-conference games, so we won’t be subjected to that kind of torture any more.  Other good news is that the schools in question made a boatload of cash, so they can continue building, and the Sun Belt will sneak up on these teams more often.

Week 3 Wrapup: The MAC

Another tough weekend for the MAC.  The league went 1-8 out of conference against 1-A teams, although Northern Illinois’ big win over Purdue provided something worth celebrating.  In looking for a silver lining, most of the losses were to teams that were rightly favored by a lot, and the two losses to C-USA teams were both on the road.  More good news is that there are few paycheck beatdowns left, as many of the teams now turn to their conference schedules.  The question, as always for these clubs, is which teams can shake off a loss to a top ten or twenty team, and which teams let it get into their heads.

Week 3 Wrap Up: WAC

This was an interesting weekend for the WAC.  They lost their next-to-last undefeated team when UNLV beat Hawaii on a last minute TD, but BYU and Utah lost, leaving Boise State as the current clear front-runner for the BCS Buster role.  They’ll still have trouble warding off Houston or TCU, but neither of those two have as easy a path as Boise State does.

Week 3 Wrap Up: Conference USA

C-USA had a chance for a big weekend, with 3 ranked teams on the schedule and two more against BCS league opponents.  The results were disappointing to say the least.  Tulsa got shut out at Oklahoma (turns out they are pretty good, even if that doesn’t help BYU much anymore), East Carolina got handled easily by [...]

Fringe Hangover, Sunday, September 20

Well, that was a disastrous day for 2-0 non-BCS teams.  BYU, Utah, SMU, Hawaii, and Tulsa all axed from the undefeated list.  If you missed it last night, Hawaii went down to UNLV on a last minute touchdown, 32-31.  Other late games saw Louisiana Monroe fall to Arizona State 38-14 while San Jose State got beat by Stanford 42-17.

Noon Games: Ouch.

Well, all of the games I tuned in for in the noon wave turned out terrible.  North Texas, East Carolina, and Toledo are down a combined 122-24 in the waning seconds. Early results by conference and what I’m keeping an eye on at 3:30:

Fringe Hangover, Saturday, September 19

Last night’s Boise-Fresno game was a classic.  Fresno’s defense just didn’t have what they needed to keep up at the end, but I think they showed that they’re a legit team and have to be the best 1-2 team in the ountry.  I also think that this game is a feather in Boise’s cap.  Fresno State still has 2 more games against BCS conference competition, and I expect them to be in both games.  Look for them to give Cincinatti all they can handle next week. Quick Preview: Boise State at Fresno State

Last time Fresno State and Boise State matched up, Boise won the home game 61-10.  Fresno showed last weekend that they’re a new team, and it looks like they may have a shot at the upset tonight (9 PM EST, ESPN/espn360)

Last week, the Bulldogs played Wisconsin to double overtime before taking the loss.  QB Ryan Colburn [...]

Week 2 Wrapup: Mountain West

Finally, the last of the Week 2 wrapups, just as week 3 gets going.  Big day over at the Pub, with my big column going up containing my non-BCS top 25 and some other pretty good stuff, and the writer’s roundtable coming together this afternoon or so, with my thoughts on some other big games.  But for now, the Mountain West: Read Post
