Week 4 Wrapup: Conference USA

This was a remarkably busy weekend around the country in the non-BCS universe, including some big wins.  One of the biggest goes to Houston, who knocked off Texas Tech with a brilliant last-minute drive, ending with Case Keenum’s scramble for a TD.  Houston now has Mississippi State, Tulsa, and Southern Miss as the biggest obstacles in its schedule, but with 9 games to go, it’s too soon to get too excited about them just yet.  Meanwhile, almost every team has a conference game under its belt, but the league race is still wide open. Fringe Hangover, Sunday, September 27

Another eventful Saturday across the college football landscape.  The top 25 got blown apart, but we had fewer upsets overall on the non-BCS side.  A handful of quick hits on the day that was, with more thoughtful recaps to come this week: Read Post

Fringe Hangover, Saturday, September 26

Watched most of Nevada-Missouri last night, finished it up this morning.  A few random thoughts after my first full game watching these two:

Colin Kaepernick does have a lot of raw talent but was lacking in decision making last night.
He especially likes to run, sometimes too soon, but doesn’t make good choices or see the field well [...]

Like C-USA, the MAC has a mix of conference and non-conference games this week.  I’ll mention some of the other games, but since nobody here is contending on the national scene, we’ll mostly look at the conference games to keep an eye on tomorrow:

Week 4 Preview: The WAC

The WAC is the only non-BCS conference that isn’t jumping headlong into conference play, with only one conference game, and it’s next Wednesday, so we’ll preview it more then.  So instead of covering every game like we will in conference play, a few highlights from the WAC weekend ahead:

Week 4 Preview: Conference USA

Finally, we come to the conference games.  Not every team starts conference play this week, but enough of them do that we’ll finally start to get a feel for how these guys compare to similar competition, instead of 1-AA teams or BCS contenders.  Plus, without so many games per conference, I can now bring you a worthwhile weekend preview instead of having to deal with 12 different games at every corner of the country.  So without further ado, here’s what to look for in C-USA this weekend: Read Post

Week 3 Wrapup: The Mountain West

While there were some bright spots, this was a disastrous weekend for much of the MWC.  Utah and BYU both probably lost their chances for BCS glory, Wyoming got shut out by a previously dreadful Colorado team, and San Diego State continues to struggle, losing to Idaho.  On the bright side, Colorado State advances to 3-0 with a win over Nevada, and UNLV knocked off Hawaii with a last minute touchdown.  Let’s look more at the week that was in the West: Read Post
